WHAT IS SR22 INSURANCE?
Simply stated, an SR22 is a certificate that shows proof of financial responsibility. Once you start your Insurance policy, your Insurance company will notify the Secretary of State in Springfield electronically which means they are notified within 24 hours in most cases. The State asks you to allow up to an additional 30 days to reflect the SR22 and show your license valid. Be sure to pay any reinstatement fees or take any additional steps the State requires so that your driving priviledges can be reinstated as soon as possible. The length of time you are required to carry SR22 is determined by the State of Illinois and usually depends on the violation. Once you fulfill that time period, your SR22 status expires. The State of Illinois will notify you in writing when you no longer need to carry it, so be sure to notify them of any address changes.
WHY DO I NEED SR22?
Below are some examples of why you may need SR22:
- DUI or DWI or any serious moving violation
- At-fault accidents while driving without insurance
- Repeat traffic offenses or getting too many tickets in a short time period
- License suspension or revoked license
HOW LONG DO I NEED SR22?
Expect a long relationship with your SR22. Most likely three years-similar to a probationary period after a criminal offense. You must carry the insurance during the specified period of time before the SR22 status can be removed. If your policy lapses or is cancelled, your auto insurance company is required to notify the State of Illinois immediately and your license will be suspended. When you restart your policy, the SR22 is filed again and your license will reinstate. The State of Illinois will notify you in writing when you no longer need to carry it, so be sure to notify them of any address changes. Once the Insurance company receives notice that the SR22 is no longer required, they will cancel or terminate the SR22 by filing a separate form with the state called an SR26, generally 10 days before the SR22's expiration.
CAN I GET SR22 IF I OWN A VEHICLE?
Yes! You will need an Owner’s/Operator’s Certificate. This type is required for those who own vehicles and wish to obtain license plates for it.
CAN I GET SR22 IF I DO NOT OWN A VEHICLE?
Yes! You will need an Operator’s Certificate. This type is required for those who do not own vehicles but still need SR22.
WHAT LIMITS OF INSURANCE DO I HAVE TO CARRY?
The amount of coverage for an SR22 Certificate must be at least $25,000 for one person killed or injured, $50,000 for two or more people killed or injured, and $20,000 for property damage. The insurance policy must conform to the provisions of the Illinois Vehicle Code.
